The Digital Signature  is the result of a digital procedure that guarantees the authenticity and integrity of messages and documents exchanged online, and has the same effect as a handwritten signature on traditional documents. (Source: Cnipa)

Digital signatures are generated through public key cryptography,a technology based on two asymmetric digital keys, one of which is private and used to affix the signature and the other being public and used for verification.

The association between the public key and the person's identity is guaranteed by a trusted third-party Certification Authority, which may be public or private and is authorised to issue digital certificates using a procedure that follows international standards and conforms to national and European legislation.

For inclusion on the list of CBI Certifiers, refer to the section "Membership of the CBI".
